Jim Metzler’s SearchEnterpriseWAN evaluation of Certeon aCelera
“…aCelera performance can be tailored to the topology, environment and performance requirements of both data centers and branches; is 64-bit; and takes advantage of the benefits of virtualization, ranging from system monitoring to high availability and distributed resource scheduling.”

“Important synergies exist among virtual servers, virtual desktops and virtual appliances such as a WOC or a performance monitoring solution. Perhaps the most important synergy is that virtual appliances are of particular interest to IT organizations when server virtualization technology has already been disseminated to branch offices and has also been implemented in the data center”.

On July 22, 2010, Riverbed announced that it will introduce a virtual WAN optimization appliance in the third quarter of 2010. It seems that Riverbed has finally come around to the idea that software-based WAN optimization makes sense.

While Certeon started off in 2005 as a hardware-based WAN optimization company, Certeon made a strategic decision in 2008 to go “virtual” with its solutions.  For the past two years Certeon has dedicated R&D resources to refine its aCelera software appliances.  Now in its third generation, Certeon’s aCelera virtual appliances have been deployed successfully in production networks around the world, reducing application response time and lowering network bandwidth requirements by up to 95 percent.

We read with great interest this article on NetworkWorld.com by Jim Metzler which looks at the WAN virtual appliance market over the next 12 – 18 months. We are always very interested in analyst projections, industry influencers’ opinions, bloggers writings, venture capital investments, public market reactions for the WAN virtual appliance market. In particular, this Network World article takes a look at what we consider the basis for our blog – do businesses want to base their branch office IT operations on a server or on a virtual appliance?

We read with great interest this blog entry from DoubleCloud entitled, “Why Should ISVs Care About Virtual Appliances, A Personal Testimonial.” The author points out two main ways in which ISVs can leverage virtual appliances:

  1. ISV’s can package their existing product as a virtual appliance. Packaging as a virtual appliance can simplify the delivery and deployment process (think cloud). And some applications may even run better in a virtualized environment.
  2. Use application infrastructure virtual appliances to reduce development time, efforts, costs.

Our good friends over at Redmondmag.com have an interesting in-depth article on “Building a Private Cloud.” This article is written by what we would call a “super-techie”; Eric Beehler has more certifications and random letter combinations after his name than your average technical guru – this guy knows of what he speaks.

We stumbled upon an interesting article that was written earlier this year entitled the Hidden Cost of the Cloud which outlines the uplift in network bandwidth charges that could be incurred if you used a cloud platform, such as Microsoft’s Windows Azure, Amazon or Rackspace, to host your applications and/or data. Now we’re not making any value judgments around the author’s recommendation to “leave the cloud and buy your own bandwidth to the Internet –- you’ll probably save 50 percent of your monthly bandwidth charges”; however, we do know a thing or two about saving on the amount of network bandwidth that enterprises consume by deploying virtualized WAN optimization.

An interesting use case for WAN optimization virtual appliances came across the wire lately. Intergence, a global professional services provider, is using software virtual appliances to not only deliver integrated virtualized solutions to its customers, but also has deployed WAN optimization virtual appliances as part of its IT infrastructure which is delivered through a managed services provider.

The technical guru’s over at DABCC have produced a white paper on “Virtualized WAN Optimization: The Road to Cloud Computing”. The paper takes a good look at the challenges of managing and servicing remote users, the approaches detailing how IT can use WAN Optimization to provide services for remote users, and highlights the competitive landscape and the players that make up the WAN optimization market. You can download the full white paper here.

One of the concepts in the paper that struck us of great importance and insight is the notion that organizations can use WAN optimization at the branch office level as the road to cloud computing and cloud services. DABCC notes that ensuring employee productivity at remote locations is a priority with every CIO, CTO, and CEO they talk to. The means to ensure these employees productivity according to DABCC is a focus on managing a cloud computing service at the branch level using virtualization technologies to optimize the WAN.
